This endeavor is an expression of profound respect for tradition. A strong tradition identifies a culture; a living tradition nurtures it. A tradition sustains a people related by common descent irrespective of the constancy of change.
A Treasury of Armenian Chants is about our musical tradition. It strives to relate the cultural significance of sacred music. It aspires to create relevance among the younger members of our community. It asserts such musical tradition to be the basis of our traditional music. The selection of liturgical chants has been accomplished through pedagogical considerations; only hymns that are simple and concise have been included. These melodies are also tied in with feast days and other significant events in the religious calendar.
Armenian sacred melodies are not created in major or minor tonalities, nor do they follow a prescribed metric organization. They evince melodic and rhythmic patterns that are related to the nature of the music and the text internally.
In addition to the liturgical chants, a small number of secular songs are added to introduce the names of established Armenian composers. Here the piano part is simplified for greater access.
